Place Tertre used to occupy the central part of the village, which was outside of Paris. The old church and the building of the former city hall, located in the center of the square, indicate the rustic origins of Montmartre. At the beginning of the 20th century, these places were chosen by Pablo Picasso and Maurice Utrillo. It was in this part of modern Paris that contemporary art was born.

Most of the poor and not yet recognized artists lived in a hostel, the so-called Bateau Lavoir, which translates as "laundry ship". This building in Montmartre outwardly resembled a laundry barge, of which many floated along the Seine in those days. Living conditions in Bato Lavoir were rather poor, and living conditions were rather primitive. The building was poorly heated, and the tenants could barely fit in the narrow rooms.
Over the years, Marie Laurencin, Juan Gris, Van Dongen, Modigliani and Picasso lived here. Often the inhabitants of the house did not have enough money for food, and they went to the nearest cafe "Nimble Rabbit". Here, poor artists could always count on a bowl of free soup.
Cabaret "Nimble Rabbit"
The Nimble Rabbit Cabaret is no less popular than the Moulin Rouge. This cabaret has its own original history. Earlier, serial killers were depicted on the walls of this entertainment establishment. Obviously, the then law enforcement officers of the city, thus, tried to warn the Parisians of the danger. Therefore, the institution was initially called "Meeting of Thieves", and later "Killers' Cabaret".
It was only thanks to the image of a rabbit jumping out of a pan by artist André Gilles that the cabaret got its current name. At the beginning of the twentieth century, this cabaret was a favorite place where poor artists and writers gathered, and today this place attracts many tourists.
Montmartre Museum
In the Museum of Montmartre, you can learn about the history of this beloved bohemian territory, from the 12th century to the present day. In the old days, the museum building housed the art workshop of Auguste Renoir. It is noteworthy that an old vineyard has been preserved next to the Montmartre Museum. About 1000 bottles of wine are produced from its grapes annually. In mid-October, a young wine festival is held at this vineyard.
